In practice it can take up to 5 weeks to receive a payment from your initial Universal Credit claim. Get prepared and make sure your claim goes smoothly!

To make a claim you will need

  • Access to a computer and internet: Claims for UC should be made online and it is important that you have ongoing access to the internet so you can manage your claim.
  • You will need an email address: to register and receive updates about your claim.
  • Verification: of who you are and where you live and full housing costs.
  • Bank Account details: for you to receive your monthly payments.
  • Details of your household members: you need to know dates of birth and all information regarding their circumstances.

Making a claim, step by step

Step 1: Make a claim online for UC here:

Step 2: Book your jobcentre appointment on the booking line.

Step 3: Verify yourself in the job centre or online.

Step 4: If necessary, apply for an advanced payment loan (up to 100% of your first total entitlement). This advance payment will include housing costs.

Unable to make a claim online?

If you are unable to make a claim online due to illness, disability, or issues with reading and writing or using a computer, you may be eligible to claim by telephone or face to face. For more information contact the Universal Credit Helpline on:

  • Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm
